THAT Was A Ski Season

But it’s all over now…

Just a few random things to note about the past few months:

  • 1st chair of the season, and waist deep in the sun
  • More deep days than I can ever remember in the Okanagan
  • Apex Rocks!
  • Retro is fun, but let’s face it…old skis suck
  • It skis deeper than it looks
  • Who does this snow report?
  • Heaven is actually a place on Earth, but it just happens to be outta bounds

Yeah, I know.  You probably don’t know half of what I’m on about.  Hey, maybe check out these pics and see if you can figure some of it out.  Maybe by the time you do, I’ll have some more sick bike riding shots for you.

Quiver Rock Origin Story

Merry Christmas!

Or more properly, Boxing Day, which I have celebrated by purchasing a film scanner. So here’s some more vintage for you.

These are some pics of the finishing move on Dangerous Dan’s old trail, the Fleshy Wound. This drop was called the Quiver Rock, but actually in the first pic it had no name at all (look for a young Digger in the background, with some very tight pants).

He rode it out. Dale was next.

Full faceplant endo, and he blacked out for a bit doing the funky chicken.

Probably that golf club like stem had something to do with, or maybe it was the toe straps. Who’s to say?

Anyway, ever since then (1996 or so….) it’s been Quiver Rock.

Opening Day

Did I mention I thought opening day on the quad was going to be a bit wild?  Well, it got a bit wild.  Although the official report only said 11 fresh, there was a lot closer to a foot on top of bottomless.

Then it cleared up.

I got up early and pinned the drive to the hill.  Had to stop for the sunrise for a sec though.

Still, got there in time for 1st chair.  Not that there’s a lot of competition for it at Apex.  Here we are around 15 minutes early, and there’s about 15 people in line.

And then it was game on.  Thigh to waist deep all over the hill.

Not bad, and I didn’t stop to take pics. Those last few were from a single ride up around mid-morning when they opened the front side up.  It was too good to stop, and too cold to have the gloves off for long (-14C at the top).

The marketing department went out and got a couple of shots though.

Best opening in years. And here I thought it was going to be a late start.
