Girls Got Skillz–Day 1

Was the weather going to co-operate?  Or was it just going to rain?

Yay sun!

Another spring, another bunch of ladies out to secure some new skills.  I couple of returning faces this year (like Chris, a couple shots down), but a lot of new ones too.  The progression is wicked to see.  A few years ago the overall level was way lower.

The morning was spent doing a bunch of the basics in the park.  Really fundamental stuff.

The president of the NOCS came down too.

Hanna is the youngest rider to come out on one of our clinics.  She’s only 15, and DRIVEN.  Pretty rad.

Big smiles!

I think we were all smiling after that rad morning, especially with the sunshine.

After lunch we went up to Myra/Bellevue to ride some trail.   There’s still a bit of snow up there.  Good thing we fed the ladies some good food, ‘cause I needed their help to turn the van around…

The weather was a bit sketchier up in the hills, but it was a RAD ride.  Definitely Bush Pilot calibre.

Our lovely crew…

Salad Doggers – 3

After a great rest yesterday, it was time to try some more bike riding.  I must admit, I was a little depressed with the way summer seems to have ended after such a brief showing this year.  Only 8 weeks of hot weather, and now we’re right back to cool and wet.  So lets go to the alpine!

Little White is the high point in the immediate area.  at 7120’, it’s almost 6000’ above the lake.  It’s also a very long approach, with a long drive around the back and a bit of a gruel to carry up around the back.

Not too bad, actually.  About an hour, of which half is fairly easy, and the hard half has some decent views.  And some fresh snow.

Once you’re up though, you’re on top of the world.

Can you see the bear?  I think he was as surprised as we were.

We sat and watched him run away.  It was good, because he stuck to the route we were following quite nicely.  Took the guesswork out.

Some nice alpine singletrack.

There’s my house.  See?

First snowball fight of the season.

The first part of the descent is pure freeride.  The trail appears and disappears until you get to treeline, and you end up riding on these cool rock outcroppings through the tundra.

When you enter the forest, it turns into an old doubletrack (an old telegraph line actually) that goes through this hall of mirrors.  Imagine Whistler’s B-Line trail covered in loam…for an hour.

Mark does his best Blair Witch Project face for us…

A little shot from the hip during the descent.

Not really the most photo worthy trail, but lots of fun to scream down at full speed.  Very loamy and smooth, a nice change from Whistler for the boys.

Half way down, and we take a break at the Bellevue Ck. trestle.

We traversed on the KVR for a while to get to an old trail into a canyon.  It rarely sees any traffic at all, and is very dark and surprisingly wet.  It felt a lot like Squamish, right down to the mossy rocks and cedar trees.

There is also this crazy section that was painted red during the fire of 2003. The retardant that the bombers dropped has set, and the colours are bizarre.

Johnny “I hate hopping trees” Cote, has had enough at this point.

A great addition to the local inventory.  We dropped 6900’ (2100m) over 20 miles (32km).  Here’s some more mapness for ya.

Mr & Mrs. Marmalade – 8

Last day in the Okanagan, and the effort of the trip is beginning to tell.  Plus, it’s genuinely hot today.  So let’s do something thoroughly tourist-y and ride the KVR through Myra Canyon.

This is the famous section of trestles and tunnels that was destroyed by fire back in 2003.

They’ve since restored it, and now it’s a favourite place to ride bikes, walk dogs, train for Ironman, etc.

It’s a nice little diversion, and it’s also a lot cooler up here than the 33C in the valley.

Anyway, it’s very scenic, even if somewhat dull to ride.

At least it’s not uphill.

Of course, it’s not down hill either, but we only did about 16km of it before dropping in to some great singletrack back down to Kelowna.

Yes, there’s plenty of singletrack to access off this section of KVR.

Get a room…

Definitely some epic light today in the Crawford Canyon.

Yes, we’re still on run #1 today.  I think it turned into something like 35km.

Not like it was some kind of death march or anything, but it was pretty long.

ANOTHER viewpoint?  OK, we’ll take another break.

After a hot lunch at the Eldorado (and I mean hot.  35C on the patio), we went to Gillard for a couple more laps.  Yvonne on a teeter…

This was a good warmup for the next few days, as we are heading to the North Shore and the Sunshine Coast for the last part of the tour.

OK, so you can’t hit ‘em all.  I think Yvonne would have hit this if we hadn’t been sorta tired out already.

Al and I cranked off one more fast one on the same lap before calling it quits.

While Yvonne waited for us and managed to snap this pic of doe and fawn.
