Sun + Fun + Germans – Final

After a much needed rest day, it was time to start heading towards Whistler and Crankworx.  Of course, it would be a bit silly to NOT go to Squamish on the way.  After all, it’s a  bit of a "Cakewalk" to get there.

As has been the theme with almost no rain in 5 weeks, the trails were blown out and loose.  It was OK, but not the usual standard.  On the plus side, we saw a Great Grey Owl.  I didn’t get a clear shot at him, so this blurry thing is all you get to see.

He hissed at me.  These are huge birds, and it’s amazing that they can manoeuver at all in the forest.  The local natives sometimes refer to them as unlucky, and associate them with danger, death, the underworld, and hidden wisdom.  Foreshadowing, anyone?

Anyway, we cracked off a couple of laps of Angry Midget, Full and Half Nelson, and P-Nuts to 19th Hole.

It was tough to shoot any shots, but I managed a few in the occasional darker or lighter area.  Plus I’m never shy about getting bum shots.  Looks like Susi gets the award again…

Oh, and we had a couple more guest stars on the trip for today.  Another German and a Swede ( at least I think he was a Swede.  With a name like Bjorn….).  I forget his wife’s name.  Then could ride, that’s most important.

Show off…

I think the haggard state of the trail was reminding the crew of home, because they sure liked Cakewalk.

Daniel even sent this drop, which is wayyyyyy gnarlier than it looks in this shot.

Shortly after, while doing some shots with Wolfgang, we heard a clatter, a loud SNAP, and then "SCHEISSE!".

That owl was trying to warn us, I guess.  Bummer Wolfie.  That’s a busted elbow you got there (not bad as far as these things go, but a bummer nonetheless).

That took our crew down a bit, and thinned the herd for after lunch.  Because casualties or no, you don’t ride Squamish with a vanload of Germans and not ride Galactic Scheisse.  It’s just not done.

After a solid lunch at the Shady Tree, the remaining survivors got their Galactic Scheisse on.  The approach has been fixed up, and lucky for us it had been cleared just a week before of all the deadfall.

A thousand vertical meters later, and we were having a great end to the first stage of the trip.

Great times with Germans once again.  Looks like we’ll be making this another annual trip.  Although I think 2 days on the Sunshine Coast will be in order for next year!

After dropping the kids off in Whistle-Dog, I had to hit the road.  Another major ride is on deck for tomorrow in the Okanagan, and with the delay at the hospital I was looking at a 3am arrival at home.

Ain’t no rest for the wicked!

Deutsche Canoe – Squampton

If it’s the last week of summer, then it must be time for Holger Meyer and one of his Die Rasenmaeher Freeride Safaris.

As usual, we’ve come up with a moderately offensive title for the trip, this time courtesy of one Cory LeClerc, who has broken his foot and has therefore been promoted to the status of “Shuttle Schlampe” for our day in Squamish.

It’s terribly dry this year.  Today being the actual last day of summer, and it’s rained something like 6mm in the past two months.  We found some fun jumps and berms to hit, but overall it was pretty sketchy out there.  No pics from Full Nelson and Half Nelson, but here’s a little jump session we had on PNuts.

Another tradition, the group pee shot.

What trip with ze Germans would be complete without a lap on Galactic Schiesse?

According to our crew, this part of the trail was scheisse, alright.

Oops, camera battery died.  Ah well, Pemby tomorrow.

Funny thing today, the equinox occurred at 4:29 pm and at 4:30 it suddenly got cool and misty.  Is summer really over?  Time will tell, but I have a feeling we’re not done with warm and sunny yet.

Hicks!

Hey, it’s been a while since we’ve seen any of them Southern types up in here.  Chad last came out with his bro wayyyyyy back in ‘02, so I don’t even have any old pics to look up to remind me about what he’s all about.  Actually, I had almost forgotten the episode altogether.  All I remembered was that him and his bro parked a truck and camper in the lane at our old pad in the Cove and hung out for a while.

Considering their background, though, I’m sure they shred.

We’re in Squamish today.  Checking out a new route into the Highlands via the top of Powersmart called Galactic/Plastic Schiesse.  It’s got a bit of a technical approach.

Not for very far though.  Although far enough it looked like a major bummer when Chad snapped his dropout at the top.  Game OVER?

Nope.  Ethan pulled out a replacement from his pack.  Do you believe that?  Serious karma points for that move. Especially considering how epic today’s ride turned out to be.  Kristian took over the repairs and we were on our way in no time.

OK, so the ‘trail’ is actually an old road that’s mostly grown over and a bit too steep.  It’s actually kind of gnarly in that you want to go fast, but it’s not really open enough to do.  You’re on the brakes most of the way.  I think it would be a better climb than a descent, but maybe some more singletrack will start to grow off the sides over time.  There area a couple of nice viewpoints on the way, like this one where Chad found out his rear brake wasn’t working that hot on the new dropout.

That’s a bit more pro…

There’s also a random stash of skiis out there.  I’ve got a pair of those bad boys I still use (Volkl G4 188’s).  That’s a real shame leaving serious weapons like that out in the bush.  Ethan wanted to take a run right here and now.

Well, one thing that route does is get us into the top of the garibaldi Highlands, which is not a bad thing.   Here’s Allan on “Don’t Tell Jude.”

It was one of those real greasy fall days in Squamish.  So fun, and the Hicks love the tech riding so we were all in a bit o’ heaven today.

At this point, we’d hit:

  1. Galactic Scheisse
  2. Plastic Scheisse
  3. Ed’s Bypass
  4. Rob’s Corners
  5. Cliff’s Corners
  6. Don’t Tell Jude
  7. Tracks From Hell
  8. Mike’s Loop

Now we were on to Entrails.

From there we hit up the End-Hole Connector, and stopped to take some pics in this Lord of the Rings sort of zone.

After that we got into a new trail called A Room With A View.   Which was so fun that we skipped any pics.  Thanks to our old pal Christian Begin for stylin’ out the new trail.   It leads into another great little trail called Gouranga, which is very similar to ARWAV.  So you get the idea…

Lots of rock faces, and open enough to see the valley below.

Now we were down a ways, so we traversed across on Lumberjack and climbed back to Alice Lake via Jack’s trail, and then up Debeck’s Hill for the final couple of trails.  That climb is tough, but always worth the effort.  Just ask Kristian as he rides the edge on Rigs of Zen.

Rigs has gotten even tougher over the past couple of years (read: she needs some lovin’ yo).   On a lightweight rig like an Altitude, this was the gnarliest ride I’ve been on all year.  Plus the grease factor, and the day was wearing on, and the logs were sliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiick!

After some more punishment we finally exited via Crouching Monkey, Hidden Squirrel and the Brackentrail.   Ethan finally hit the wall in the final 3 minutes of riding, so that was a good call on the ride plan.  Just long enough to slay one of the crew.

On exit, we ran into some kind of vintage Ford rally.

Yeah…awesome.   The end of an epic day, on the couch.  And this guy didn’t even come on the ride.
