Cranksgiving – Brent

One more epic.  That’s all I ask.

Brent has been on the radar for quite some time now. You can see the bugger from Summerland, just looming over town, and when I’m skiing it’s just over yonder.   After seeing how cherry conditions were on Saturday, I managed to hook up with some more locals, and went in from Nickleplate lake for one of the bigger rides this year.

We started at the other end of the lake, and I’ll be doing that route from now on vs. the way we went in on Saturday.  Way more fun.  It took us way less time today to get to Sheep Rocks too.  Even though we rode further.  Smaller crew, and these old guys are stupid fast on those little bikes.

This time though, instead of punching up to the first summit, we just went through the pass between the two “Rocks” and continued north towards Brent.  There’s an old trail that’s been cleaned out and that first descent is almost Retallack style with how steep and flowy it runs.

Here’s a bit of the line, and a nice view of the high point of Brent.

The climb up Brent is also easier than the climb up Sheep.  The new part of the trail is made for 29’rs, and gay though they might be, they need bigger switchbacks.  The whole ride is cleanable, even though I didn’t.  One or two spots are pretty steep, and with this being day 4, I was a bit tired.

Yes, that is the trail.  It’s just not very worn in.

At the top.  We’re at 7200’ again, and none of us know which way the trail is.   Hmmmmmm…maybe we’ll see if we can follow tracks.

OK, we found lots of tracks to follow.  After a 20km descent on mixed trail, road, and doubletrack, I remembered to take some more pics.

Actually, this ride isn’t as scenic as some others around here, but it is a beast of a ride.  Definitely one to do again.

Here’s a profile and a map.  We did it in about 5.5 hours, and there’s more trail available that what we hit.   Next time I’m resting up more for this one.

Cranksgiving – Naramata

I don’t know where to ride today.  Why don’t we have a beer and figure it out?

Good old Sven, always ready to help.  When in doubt, go to the Mice.  What’s the worst that could happen?  This?

Well, I guess it doesn’t work out for everyone, but we had a good time out there.

The first lap was one for the ladies.

The second lap was for the boys.

Raise your unibrow if you like to ride the desert.

Cranksgiving – Sheep Rocks

October in the alpine!

It’s so not cold.  Could have used some cold water to throw on these two, though.

Sheep Rocks is a pair of minor summits to the north of Apex.  It’s about a 25km ride, with a partial out and back portion.  It’s a nice mellow adventure, perfect for a nice Cranksgiving gang ride.

Yup, that’s ice on the creek there, but it was surprisingly warm out.  I was down to shorts and a t-shirt in no time.

Here we are, at almost 7000’ asl, and it’s plenty warm and dry.  The driest summer in `07 years of record keeping around here, and this is the payoff.

A short punchy climb later and we were on the summit.  You can see the Seven Summits in the background, and the Okanagan valley below.  I hear there’s a trail down to the lake from up here, maybe I’ll have to try to find that one…

So, this is kind of weird.  I didn’t know that ladybugs hibernated up here, but there were literally thousands of them in little nooks and crannies on the summit.

No time to marvel at the wonders of nature though.  We had some alpine to shred, right Steve?

and Barb…

…and Veronica…

..and the always glum Susan.

It’s about 12km from here to the bottom, mostly down hill.  I can see why everyone is all smiles.

I can also see why Steven might have trouble staying awake after.

Luckily, he woke up in time for us to crash a Thanksgiving dinner.  Veronica looks like she’s a bit nervous in this one, but then again, if you were caught in a My Little Pony fight between Chevy and Dorothy, wouldn’t you be a bit scared?
